Don was a McAllen High School graduate of 1971. He played football and competed in track and field for the McHi Bulldogs. Ausmus captured the Class 4A (Now 5A) state championship in the shot put (62′, 0.5′) his senior season. He lettered at the University of Texas in 1972 & 1973. Ausmus then concentrated on bodybuilding where he enjoyed a successful career competing on the national circuit between 1977 and 1982. In 1977, he was Mr. Texas AAU, 2nd; 1978 Mr. Texas 1st and Mr. America, AAU, Medium, 11th; 1981 Mr. America, AAU, Heavy weight, 3rd; Junior Mr. America, AAU Heavy weight, 3rd; 1982 Junior Nationals, NPC, Heavyweight, 3rd.

Back in the Valley at the end of his bodybuilding career, Ausmus also enjoyed a 26-year stint as a Division I High School Football Official and a member of the RGV Chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials.

In 2000, Don was selected to the Freedom Newspapers All-Millennium RGV Track & Field Team. He has been a State Farm Insurance agent since 1984 and has his own agency in north McAllen.
